Potential means horns
23/05/2021
Growth and success in the real world, in any profession, depends on the degree of individuality and differentiation. Growth is not about turning weaknesses into strengths, but about learning how to make the most of your talents, skills and competences. The most valuable employees will not be those who are totally matched with the company rigid models not those similar to each other. Our horns will be valuable! So how to bet on your uniqueness?
Why do organizations try hard to establish rigid standards and models and check in the annual assessmen twhether the employee fits them? Or maybe they still need to be "trimmed"? Organizations often launch control in this area, assuming that everything can be standardized, arranged, designed, and then measured and compared. It is simpler and easier to prove management or analytical skills and to show evidence and facts. Oh, how much it does not suit our horned souls!
I also believe that the question of how to motivate is a wrong question. It suggests that there is a set of tools that the leader can use to motivate his employees. Tools such as a bonus, a raise, and even public recognition or promotion are very short-lived. We call it external motivators. The role of a leader is therefore to find potential, internal motivation and assign the employee adequate tasks and goals.
What do leaders need to do to see the uniqueness of their employees?
- forgive and understand the weaknesses,
- do not force into the rigid model of competences,
- find time to observe the employee,
- ask what is attractive to him, what develops him and fascinates him at work,
- notice what the employee is best at,
- ask what the employee would like to do the most, what would fulfill him,
- propose the development of new skills and competences in areas that supports the development of potential.
Maybe as leaders and mentors we can help them?
And the most i mportant thing! Happy and fulfilled will be those who dare to develop their potential, even though it may require leaving the comfort zone, showing their horns and sometimes even changing jobs.
What is ahead of us?
- leaving the comfort zone,
- answering the question "What do I want?",
- using your energy for this purpose,
- determination,
- consistency.
What may happen?
- deceiving ourselves that we don't want it,
- depreciating your talents,
- waiting and seeing if the circumstances will be favorable.
So? what do you chose?
